The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
