Previous FBI chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.

The former director's legal representative submitted the response acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple factors including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the judge they planned to present various petitions to terminate the legal matter before a court case, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's proceedings was first handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Trump after his examination into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the magistrate state his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not filed, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government allege the former director lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the upper house by stating he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and slow" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"We have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to challenging the former president," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The charges against the former director emerged after Donald Trump published on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
