Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
