United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with An additional 11 Countries
British authorities has placed 11 new nations to its official advisory roster regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
This updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following several high-profile incidents such as the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance often employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Foreign Office representative the minister said that every traveler should recognize the symptoms of methanol poisoning.
