Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
